Due: Friday, June 11 by 5 PM Week 4:  Self-reflection post (to be copied into your spring reports along with your faculty advisor’s report). Be sure to reflect on your progress towards your initial goals. Would you recommend this senior project to another student? Why? 1-2 images/photos Respond to a comment from last week Self-Reflection I DEFINITELY chose the right Senior project. The main reason for choosing this project was to learn more about research and medicine since that is the field I want to go into in the future whether it be through engineering, medical school, etc. Talking to Dr. Lindner, Matt Muller, The Anh Nguyen, among others, I gained great insights on what research is like as well as how to compare an engineering master's, a Ph.D., and med school. I now feel better equipped to choose the right path. Getting to know everybody at the lab was a blessing and someday if I run or work in a lab, that is the kind of team I want to work with every day. In fact, someday I ...

Vocabulary to Know:  Bleaching: The longer you leave fluorescent light on a fluorescent substance for example that you would use to tag molecules, the fluorescence will fade and it will be lighter. Story of a Moment: It was great to see how excited everybody got at the lab when the results were successful for the tracking bubbles. As I walked out of the lab everyone was happy that it was a good, productive day.    What have I learned?  This week I got to observe how they tested whether these bubbles they produce will stick to blood cells. I am a bit confused about whether this is just white or red blood cells. These bubbles can be tracked to see where there is low blood flow or other kinds of blood flow-related problems. A modification to the outside receptors of the bubbles will make it bind to platelets or other molecules diversifying the possible molecules that they can track. These bubbles are luminescent under certain light white the cells appear clearer under a...

Vocabulary to Know:  Eastern Conference Final- The NBA playoffs go as follows. There are two conferences: the Eastern and theWestern Conference. At the end of the regular season, the top eight teams from each conference qualify for the playoffs. The top-seeded team matches with the 8th seeded team in the conference, the 2nd with the 7th, the 3rd with the 6th, etc. Whoever wins the best of seven games in these first-round match-ups, qualifies for the conference semifinals. Then two teams make it to the conference finals. Finally, one team from each Conference makes it to the Finals where the winner out of 7 games is declared the Champion.  Walking bucket- This is an expression for a basketball player that can get the team points essentially whenever they want to because they are THAT good. This is often crucial in the final moments of the game, or in the final game in a series because the teams are so competitive that winning or losing can be a matter of one shot.  Clutch-...

Vocabulary to Know:  Leukocyte/White blood cell- These cells circulate in the blood and are part of the immune system's response to injuries, damaging substances in the body, etc. Blood Vessels/Venules- Both of these effectively mean the same thing for our purpose. This is where the red blood cells and most importantly, the leukocytes are traveling. Endothelium- These layer of cells lines the inner walls of blood vessels. Stuck Leukocyte- This cell is not moving because it is bound to the endothelium. Rolling Leukocyte- This cell is still moving along the endothelium. Ischemic Injury- These are injuries caused by low or lack of blood flow. The muscles do not receive oxygen.  Summary:  My Senior Project is to work at Dr. Jonathan Lindner's laboratory.  He is one of the head cardiologists at OHSU and is allowing me to contribute to the team's current experiment.  researching whether the inhibition of a protein called NLRP3 prevents white blood cells from causing i...
